The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda has modified the conditions of free conventional medium-distance travel passes to prevent the misuse of these tickets. Some users have been reserving a seat on trains with the pass and then not travelling.
After detecting irregular use of the tickets, which undermines the effectiveness of measures aimed at encouraging demand for public transport and helping to reduce CO2 emissions, the Ministry has approved a series of measures, most of which will be implemented on 7 December, 2022.
A resolution was published this Monday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), which modifies the operation of the sale and use of free multi-journey Media Distancia tickets, the formalisation of journeys and the purchase of season tickets will be restricted and repeated irregular use will be sanctioned, among other actions.
Specifically, Renfe will keep the 20 euro deposit and cancel the free travel pass for users who, on at least three occasions, have not cancelled their seat reservation at least two hours in advance if they are not going to travel on the train.
