Former Spanish Prime Minister Felipe González has said this morning that the Law for the Guarantee of Sexual Freedom, better known as the “only yes is yes” law, “is badly made”. According to the former Prime Minister, this is because it contains “a manufacturing defect” that has led to a chain of reduced sentences for sexual offenders and even the release of rapists, which is why it must be “rectified immediately”. This opinion is shared by many socialist leaders and has been supported by partners of the Government, such as the PNV and Compromís, who have shown themselves to be in favour of tackling the reduction of sentences.
González has been particularly harsh on reactions such as that of the Minister for Equality, Irene Montero, sponsor of the text, who accused judges of being “sexist” for applying the reduced sentences. “There may be male chauvinist judges, surely… But what has been said is a rather useless generalisation. In view of the chain of decisions based on the law itself, it is not a defect of macho judges, but a manufacturing defect. What there is is a very faulty bill of that law. And when you make a mistake, and you have the right to make a mistake, you have to correct yourself, and not ask others to correct”, he asserted.
